With the Guest Director of Brighton Festival being Aung San Suu Kyi in 2011, the theme for the festival's
Children's Parade was The Rights of the Child. Clare Hackney, Lead Artist for Highlight,was invited to put
together a Children's Rights Art Trail through Brighton for the time of the festival. 12 sites were found
through central Brighton, and back along the seafront.Three other artists of different ages, contributed

Lead Artist for Highlight, Clare Hackney, has been exploring the themes of the Convention of the Rights
of the Child with her work for some time with Highlight's touring show Children at War.
The Convention , which was created in New York in 1989, sets out 46 articles of special protection that
need to be put in place to help children have a healthy, safe and happy childhood around the world .
This trail explores 13 of these articles.
1. Article 32
The right to protection from economic exploitation and work that is hazardous, interferes

with her/his education or harms her/his health or physic , mental, spiritual ,moral and social
development.
2. Article 6

The right, if disabled, to special care, education, and training to help her/him enjoy a full life
in conditions which ensure dignity, promote self reliance and a full and active role in society.

The right to leisure, to engage in play, and to participate in recreational, cultural and artistic activities.
